Academics and Activities

WVCA has grades Preschool through sixth.  Each grade has unique curriculum and activities.  Below is a short summary of the academic emphasis and activities in each grade.

Preschool

Preschool has a developmental approach emphasizing hands-on activities.  Children have group rug time for Bible and stories.  There are many art projects and large and small motor activities.  Preschool goes to a farm every year.

Kinderprep

Kinderprep is "a year to grow". Students are given the Gessell Test of Developmental Readiness before entering Kindergarten.  Those determined to need an extra year go to Kinderprep.  In this class students spend a year developing small and large motor skills, learning letters and sounds, learning coloring and cutting.

Kindergarten

Kindergartners learn to read and write, emphasizing phonics, and learn about numbers including adding up to 10.  They do art projects for all seasons and holidays.  They go to the Pumpkin Patch, a grocery store and a to a live theater production every year.

Second grade continues with lots of reading and phonics and spelling.  They write about everything!  Second graders sharpen their math skills and learn to regroup in addition and subtraction.  "The Community" is the emphasis throughout the year in Social Studies.  In Bible, second graders learn the Books of the Bible, how to look up scriptures, and character qualities of the people of the Bible.  Second graders visit the Channel Islands Harbor Visitors Center and spend the afternoon on the beach.  They also take the Metrolink Train to Los Angeles for a walking tour of downtown.  Click the link above for additional details of field trips, projects, and more!

Third Grade

Third grade works on reading comprehension, multiplication and division facts, cursive writing.  They study native Americans and the human body and nutrition.  Third grade has a Pow Wow every spring and go on field trips such as restaurants, plays and museums.

Fourth Grade

Fourth grade continues the emphasis on reading comprehension.  In math they work on long multiplication and division.   Critical thinking is emphasized in all areas.  California history is studied extensively, culminating in an exciting, day long "Gold Rush Days" activity involving all of fourth grade and their families.  Field trips include the San Fernando Mission and Knotts Berry Farm.

Fifth Grade

Fifth grade emphasizes fractions, colonies, parts of speech, written communication, the 50 states, reading comprehension and the Old Testament.  Field trips include museums and plays and an in-house experience, "Walk Through the Revolution".

Extra-Curricular Activities:

There are many extra-curricular activities available at WVCA.  We have two vocal choirs and a handbell choir that meet before school.  Participation in any choir is determined by tryout.  After school there are classes in dance, drawing, and American Sign Language.  The classes offered each trimester vary depending on the availability of teachers.  There are sports teams available for boys and girls on a tryout basis. Please see the sports section for more details.

Please call the school office for the most current information about extra-curricular activities and schedules.
